Campaign for the first

Wildlife Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre

in Wales

We are on a mission to build the first purpose built veterinary led wildlife hospital and rehabilitation centre in Wales.

But we need your help.

Wales is a haven for wildlife and a hotspot for those who love to watch it. But the reality is that the wild animals of Wales are under threat.

A major study spanning almost 20 years found Welsh wildlife has decreased on average by 20% since 1994.

Of almost 3,900 species assessed, more than 2% are already extinct in Wales.

Continued pressures on wildlife mean that Wales is now one of the most nature depleted countries on Earth.

Why is wildlife struggling?

Habitat loss, agricultural practices and human-wildlife conflict including predation from domestic animals, road traffic collisions and hunting.

Every year thousands of individuals find themselves orphaned, starving, displaced, injured or diseased and needing help.

At the moment there are no veterinary facilities in Wales to treat these special animals

A few heroic and dedicated individuals have been doing their best to help these animals, but most of them are having to be transported for hundreds of miles to the nearest rehabilitation unit in England; a journey many of them just won’t survive.

The Welsh coastline is home to thousands of grey seals who breed every winter. At present there is no local rehabilitation facility for injured, sick or orphaned seal pups. That means facing not only the stress of initial assessment and uplift from the beach, but then a 170-300 mile journey to a rehabilitation centre.

Not only is this journey stressful, it is incredibly uneconomical, time-consuming and requires significant coordination, careful planning and the dedication of volunteers to drive great distances for individual animals.

We have the same situation for seabirds, foxes, badgers and otters, among many other species.

This facility will provide all species with dedicated, specialist and veterinary led care, followed by local rehabilitation to get these animals back where they belong in the wild.

What do we need?

A suitable site

We need a site to start this project, and one which will allow for the space the animals will need to build their strength before release into the wild. We have a few proposed sites, but we have yet to secure funding to purchase and begin works.

The main veterinary hospital will be the forefront of the facility, with easy access for animals to be brought in and assessed for further care.

Further wards enabling biosecurity, isolation and careful management of different species will reduce risk of cross infection and stress to these animals.

A separate seal hospital and seal pools to build these animals strength up so they will be at their peak fitness to go back out to the wild.

There are a few essential components of the piece of land we’re looking at;

  • Enough acreage to allow for animals to be prepared for release. There must be enough room to be able to keep prey and predatory species separate to reduce stress while recuperating.

  • To be within reach of volunteers - we need the balance to be in a quiet location paired with being close enough for dedicated local volunteers to be able to regularly make the journey to the facility to assist with its day to day running.

  • We would love this facility to have educational potential and to have a conference room or classroom through which we could educate the next generation about our native wildlife and how important it is to protect it. Not only that but we want his facility to be at there forefront of wildlife science here in Wales. To be a meeting place for local groups to share knowledge and crucial information to further protect our wildlife in Wales.

Funding,

sponsorship and grants

Unfortunately a purpose built facitily in itself is not cheap, and we are looking for financial support to get this project off the ground.

We are looking for passionate supporters, compassionate businesses and visionary funders to help us built Wales first dedicated Wildlife Hospital.

We are openly seeking sponsorship for this revolutionary project, so if you think you can help please get in contact with us to arrange a meeting.

Caring for these animals also comes with considerable financial implications, with the cost of treating and rehabilitating each individual seal pup between £3000-£5000. We are looking for continued support to ensure this facility is sustainable.

Volunteers

A rescue facility like this is relys on commited reliable volunteers.

From cleaning cages and feeding animals, to administering treatments and fixing enclosures, this project will need compassionate volunteers to keep it going.

With training, PPE and complete veterinary guidance, we will need a community of people who are passionate about wildlife, animal welfare and conservation.
